Day of Party - Setup Instructions

When you host a sip and paint party, here is what you need for setup.  Be sure to grab the supplies above for the party.  If you have 10 people, have 10 canvases, 10 sets of brushes, etc.

  1. Start to set up 1 hour before the event.  Make sure you have enough tables and chairs for each party member.
  2. Place the plastic tablecloths on the tables
  3. If you have easels, set those up first.  It is helpful to put canvas panels on easels.  If you are not using easels, remove any plastic from the canvas and place them on the table in front of each chair.   Easels are also helpful when the paintings dry.
  4. Brushes are next!  Place a set of brushes next to each canvas.
  5. Water cups can be filled 3/4 ways and placed for each participant.
  6. Next  – Paper Towels – I like to use the select-a-sheet, rip and fold in half.  Each participant will likely go through 2 of these.  I typically collect dirty paper towels halfway through class and give them a new one.
  7. Most of the table is set – excellent job!  In our final step, you can distribute the paints for each person; put the paint tubes unopened on the plate.
  8. If you know what the group is painting, printing a copy for each person is good.  It helps visual learners follow along.

Additional Paint Supply Details

Brushes

 – When it comes to brushes, I feel like ‘the more the better – here is why.  You typically need larger size brushes to cover the background, medium size brushes to define objects and detailed brushes for the fine point work.

I have seen paint supplies include only 3 brushes – why!  We include 10 brushes in our DIY paint kits – which gives you all the options.

So, we have written about quantity, let’s talk about quality.  If you are a casual hobbyist painting, you don’t need really expensive brushes.  You will be okay with $5 – $10 set of brushes from your local craft store.

Advice: Don't overspend on brushes
You can use very basic brushes for the party. Most participants will use them again. We find that if people want nicer brushes down the road, they will buy them.

For the best experience in your DIY paint party, be sure to focus on having a variety vs. quality. OK brushes will be fine for this activity. Trust us.
Paints

 – There many brands of paint, so think about what is your budget for the class.  If you are a beginner and like to paint as a hobby or for crafting, you can buy a student grade paint or more introductory paints.

Trust me, you can still paint something beautiful with a non expensive brand.  Read more below and I will provide you with a range of paint supply options for your painting party.   You will likely have left over supply for future paintings or parties.

  • We use Reeves in our paint supplies, which is a really high quality and easier to work with than more cheap quality.
  • Other paints you can consider are any other acrylic basic grade.  You can buy any size container, keeping in mind 1oz. per person.
Tip: Get your supplies early
Whether you are buying paint and sip supplies from us or not, we suggest to buy them early. Why? It is better to be prepared vs. not.
Canvas / Panels

– You can use any size canvas you wish . I typically included 11″ x 14″ in my paint and sip supplies, because it offers good coverage and it is a good size for displaying.

It isn’t too small or too big to hang or frame!  I have been using canvas panels vs. stretched canvas, because they don’t get damaged in the mail and they are easier to store at home.

Sometime stretched canvas on a wooden frame can get damaged, which is sad could it could impact your painting and we don’t want that to happen.

Easels are Optional

 – Easels are nice to have, especially if you can afford it.  It is nice to lean your canvas, so you aren’t hunching over the party table.  When the canvas is up on the easel, you can walk away and reflect more easily.  My advice, buy an easel – you will have it forever.  It is worth.

We sell easels for $5 per person and are happy to include them if that interests you.

You can do it!

Buy kits from us and we will consult you through the process.
Tip! Time Management is Key.
You need to moderate the time of the class, as friends paint ensure everyone is making good progress. The goal is the finish the painting within 120 minutes.
You get to pick the painting!
Whether you partner with us or not - you can pick the painting for the group. If you need help choosing an 'easy' picture, please let us know! We can help.

Plastic Table Clothes – Pick up these at your local dollar store or Target.  Pick up 1 plastic table cloth for every 4-6 people.  Also buy an extra 1-2 just in case.   This ensures the painting areas stay clean during the party.

Cup for Water – Everyone participating will need a cup of water to rinse their brushes.  You place a 3/4 cup of water in a plastic cup in front of their station – Easy peasy.  Make sure you have cups on hand.

Small Plate / Palette for Mixing Paints – Use Paper or Plastic plates that are disposable for easiest clean up.  Everyone needs a plate to mix colors.  Some people may need 2, so make sure you have enough on hand.  The cost is low, so it is worth buying many.

Paper Towels – you will likely have messy people in your group – 1 Roll of Paper Towels is good for a group of 15.  All types of messes happen, a water cup can get knocked over, paint on fingers and beyond.  Be prepared.
